SCI Lynn is recruiting!Social Capital Inc. is recruiting AmeriCorps positions for the 2008/09 year. These members will coordinate civic engagement initiatives in the areas of Engaging Youth, Building Bridges, Connecting Citizens, and Developing Leaders. Members will serve ten months, from September 2008 to June 2009, and receive a modest living allowance during their service and an educational award. We Are Looking for Translators

SCI Lynn is looking for translators to volunteer editing a Multilingual Publication for residents of Lynn. This publication will include listings of basic services and resources available to the Lynn community at large. The goal of this publication is to increase accessibility to resources, increase the usage of those services, and promote civic engagement. SCI Lynn hopes to have the publication finished by fall 2008 in the five following languages Haitian Creole, Khmer, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian. LHAND Foreclosure Seminar

Lynn Housing Authority and Neighborhood Development (LHAND) is hosting a FREE Foreclosure Seminar on Tuesday, September 9th, from 6:00PM to 9:00PM. The seminar will be held in the LHAND Community Room located at 10 Church Street. The LHAND encourages each participant to bring a copy of their last mortgage statement. Lynn Arts Coffee House and Open Mic

LynnArts Central Square Coffeehouse and Open Mic at Rantoul Vault Theatre welcomes you to participate in the open mic performances happening every third Sunday of each month. LynnArts is located at 25 Exchange Street in Lynn. Join in for exciting featured artist, followed by open mic performers. Ford School Garden Ceremony

Congratulations goes out to the Highlands Coalition and the Ford Community School, which officially dedicated the new International Children’s Garden at Ford School on Monday.  Students will have the opportunity to grow plants in the garden to learn about plants and healthy eating, and the garden will also serve as a great resource for the surrounding neighborhoods.  SCI Lynn was pleased to support the effort as part of the Neighborhood Leadership Awards program.  Many Lynn notables were on hand for the event including Mayor Chip Clancy, Superintendent of Schools Nick Kostan and School Committee member Maria Carrasco, joining project organizer David Gass and Principal Claire Crane.  More on the event in the Lynn Item here:  http://www.itemlive.com/articles/2008/08/05/news/news05.txt” 

Volunteers needed for Park Restoration

Once again, Part of the Solution of Girls Inc. is partnering with Straight Ahead, and the Lynn Department for Public Works to improve the Strawberry Avenue park. Volunteers are needed to paint over the graffiti, mount poles for the Volleyball net, and re-paint the Basketball court. The park restoration is made possible by the Essex County Community Organization (ECCO). The City of Lynn strongly encourages each Lynn  resident to participate on Tuesday August 12th at 3PM. Project Bread

For the past several months, Project Bread has continued to work with many local partners to increase participation in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) in Lynn. Many parents do not know that their children can access free meals in different Lynn neighborhoods during the summer.

The Lynn SFSP operates at several locations, around lunch time, all summer long. Anyone under age 18 can receive a meal while school is out, no registration or identification is necessary, and many of the sites have fun activities as well!
